After a night in San Luis Obispo, we pointed the car north and headed for the Monterey area. While it would have been glorious to visit Pebble Beach, the golf pros and that little tourney made it difficult, so we skipped it. Regardless, we had a great time in Monterey.
Money saving tip: We parked downtown for $6 and took the free trolley to the aquarium. The trolley was a great way to see a few places in the city while keeping our visit nice and simple. We highly recommend it!
Monterey Bay Aquarium
We love visiting aquariums. It never seems to get old. This time around we went to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and it was awesome. There are so many large tanks there. It’s really impressive.
After a couple of hours at the aquarium, we had lunch in the cannery row area down the street. Then we hopped on the trolley to head back to the car. But! I remembered we had passed a wharf on the way to the aquarium. I was curious about it and we didn’t have that much of a schedule except to leave the area around 3:30, so we decided that we’d go ahead and stop there. What a great decision!
Oh man! The sea life is amazing here. There were so many sea lions. It was incredible! We watched them for a while and it was intriguing to see them in their natural habitat. It was neat to see them stacked on top of each other and how they interacted and barked at each other. They swam around the marina, too. As we made our way to the end of the wharf, there were more sea lions diving in and out of the water!
After wildlife watching, we hopped the trolley again, took care of a Jamba Juice fix for the hubby, and pointed the car south for San Simeon.
We took a slow-ish drive down the Pacific Coast Highway. I chomped on some ginger gum while the hubby navigated the twists and turns. Thankfully, I did not get sick! What a relief! We made a few stops along the way to take in the scenery. Closer to Monterey, it was a bit chilly and windy but as we made our way down the coast, it got a little warmer and the sky became a little more blue.
